The Challenge
Following weeks of planning, trepidation and concerns for the weather, the Thermocable team completed a huge feat of endurance this weekend – climbing the Yorkshire 3 peaks in just less than 12 hours!
The Yorkshire Three Peaks of Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough are some of the best known hills, nestled within the stunning landscape of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. They reach a collective height of over 7000 ft, with the breakdown as follows:
- Whernside – 736 m or 2,415 ft
- Ingleborough – 723 m or 2,372 ft
- Pen-y-ghent – 694 m or 2,277 ft
So, donning our walking boots, packing (and wearing) our waterproofs, and hiking the 24.46 miles over mountainous terrain, Thermocable’s intrepid adventurers battled the elements, and still managed to limp to work on Monday.
The Cause
Organised and spearheaded by our very own Production Operator, Richard Higgins, the challenge was put together for a combination of team-building and fundraising for the amazing charity, ‘Down’s Syndrome North East’.
Down’s Syndrome North East is the leading organisation for the help and support of all people with Down’s Syndrome and their families and friends. Covering Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside, Durham and Teesside, the charity holds a special place in the heart of our Production Manager, Stan Glassbrook and his family.
Stan’s beautiful 2 year old granddaughter, Hope, has Down’s Syndrome. Hope’s family have been supported by Down’s Syndrome North East – and as a result, we wanted to give something back! To provide extra support and strength, we were also joined by Stan’s wife, Viv, whose determination and passion got her through the challenge.
The Conclusion
Completing the challenge in a fantastic 11 hours and 59 minutes, we absolutely smashed our fundraising target of £250. Raising £732 – a whopping 292% of our goal – we couldn’t be more proud of our achievements. For anyone who would like to make a last minute contribution, you can do so here.
With our very own Administrative Assistant, Annie Borek, taking on the challenge for Allerton cat rescue where she volunteers every week, you can also donate to her link which is here. This is to upgrade the existing cages for the mother and baby units.
